BOS is the fourth airport to test the prototype Runway Status Lights (RWSL) system designed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory, ARCON Corp., and the FAA to help reduce and prevent runway incursions and accidents. RWSL at BOS is a fully automatic, advisory safety system which operates independent of air traffic control using airport surveillance data from the ASDE-X system and advanced safety logic. Operational Evaluation of RWSL at BOS is scheduled to commence on or about June 1, 2010 and last approximately 3 months with an option to extend it if successful.

BOS is the first airport to test NEW Runway Intersection Lights (RILs) and NEW crossing runway logic for Takeoff Hold Lights (THLs), both designed to help prevent accidents and incursions on intersecting runways 9 and 15R. THLs on Runways 9 and 15R at BOS will also function with legacy logic as tested at DFW and LAX to help prevent takeoffs from occupied runways. BOS will also test Runway Entrance Lights (RELs) at select taxiway locations.

The right hand graphic is a Runway diagram of BOS with locations of in-pavement THLs, RILs, and RELs marked with red bars on Runways 4R/22L, 4L/22R, 15R/33L, and 9/27.

Runway RELs Locations THLs Locations RILs Locations
9/27 Taxiway C on the north side of the runway only  From 375’ beyond the beginning of the runway takeoff threshold for a length of 1,500’  Beginning at the runway/runway hold line on 9 for the 15R/9 intersection extending back toward the approach end of 9 for a length of 3,000’
15R/33L Taxiway D on the north side of the runway only  From 375’ beyond the beginning of the runway takeoff threshold for a length of 1,500’  Beginning at the LAHSO/runway hold line on 15R for the 15R/9 intersection extending back toward the approach end of 15R for a length of 3,000’
4L/22R Taxiway E and K on both sides of the runway  No THLs are currently installed  No RILs are currently installed
4R/22L Taxiway E on the east side of the runway only No THLs are currently installed  No RILs are currently installed
Operational status of RWSL at BOS will be broadcast on the ATIS
